Ponte Vedra Beach youth among winners at Junior Golf Tour’s Major Championship

Will McGriff, 12, of Ponte Vedra Beach took home the first place trophy in the boys 11 to 13 division of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s Major Championship.

Held July 16-17 at Mohegan Sun, the top performers and champions of the boys and girls divisions received points for the Junior Golf Scoreboard Ranking. The winner of each division was invited to play in the national championship to be held in December, and the top 10 finishers received points towards the Hurricane Cup.

McGriff kept a comfortable lead throughout the day to take home the victory with a score of 169. He also placed first for the streak for the most birdies with two, and the longest bogey-free streak of four holes.

Bijah LaFollette of New York finished second with a two-day total of 186, while Cameron Bruan of Scarsdale, New York finished third with a total of 203.

Among boys under 10, Dane LaFollette from New York was the champion, shooting a two-day total of 244.

In the boys 14 to 15 division, Burton Fricke of Mendham, New Jersey claimed the first place trophy, shooting a final round of 81 and winning by nine shots. Colin Cusa of Westport, Connecticut earned a second place trophy with a two-day total of 175. Steven Wieder from Bronxville, New York came in third place with a two-day total of 196. Fricke and Cusa tied for the lead birdies with two, while Fricke led in total pars per category with 15.

In the boys 16 to 18 set, Aj Sanzaro from Whethersfield, Connecticut was the champion, shooting a final round of 75. Jack O’Hara of Loudonville, New York and Dustin Cook of Westport, Connecticut tied for second with a two-day total of 154. The longest bogey-free streak went to Sanzara and Cook with nine holes.

In the girls 14 to 18 division, Gabrielle Correia from Yorktown Heights, New York was the champion. She shot a final round of 82, edging out Alexandra Sazhin by two strokes. Sazhin, from New Fairfield, Connecticut, finished second with a two-day total of 161. Theresa Luu from Mullica Hill, New Jersey finished third with 165. Sazhin led the birdie category with five, and Luu led the bogey-free streak category with six holes.

In the under 13 division, Sydney Nethercott earned a first place trophy. Nethercott shot 32, edging out Caitlin Tully by 8 shots. Tully, from Brewster, New York, finished second with a two-day total of 174, and Bimba Carpenter finished in third with 182. Nethercott also led with bogey-free streaks with five holes, and led the par category with 18.
