“Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?” Guests at the Alhambra Theatre & Dining will be able to find out starting Wednesday, Sept. 12, when the show opens its four-week run.
Based on the 1975 novel by John R. Powers, this coming-of-age musical surrounds the 1950s Catholic education of eight Chicago children, following them from the start of elementary school through their senior prom and beyond. Touching on such topics as first confessions, puppy love, patron saints, sex education classes and the importance of not wearing patent leather shoes, as they could reflect up under the school uniform’s plaid pleated skirts.
The original production of the show opened in Chicago in 1979, kicking off a four-and-a-half-year run at the Forum Theater — the longest in the city’s history. “Shoes” also broke house records during its two runs in Philadelphia.
Crafted by Alhambra Executive Chef Dejuan Roy to match the themes of the show, the dinner menu will offer attendees a culinary experience fitting of America’s longest-running dinner theater. For their first course, guests will have their choice of either acorn squash bisque or spinach salad with red onion, cherry tomato and warm bacon dressing. Next, options for the main course will include creamy chicken alfredo fettuccine with fresh peas and tomatoes; fried pork chops with yellow rice pilaf and black eyed peas (or the gluten-free baked pork chops with fall vegetables); cracker meal-crusted mahi with pineapple relish, coconut jasmine rice and asparagus; and fall flatbread pizza with slow roasted fall vegetables, roasted Vidalia onion, mozzarella and kale salad; followed by a dessert of either peach cobbler or triple chocolate cake.
