Annual luncheon honors St. Johns County first responders

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Network Realty hosted its fourth First Responders Appreciation Luncheon on Feb. 20, honoring all first responders serving in St. Johns County.

The annual event was created by Berkshire Hathaway Broker Associate Bill Irwin after Hurricane Matthew and its 65 mile per hour winds swept through the county in 2016.

“We decided to do it as a thank you for everything they do for us and rather than the event being a one-time deal, we decided to do it every year,” Irwin said.

This was Commander Scott Beaver’s first year attending the luncheon. He said that on behalf of St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar and the St. Johns County Sheriff's office, it was everything they could have hoped for.

“They have all kinds of food, like pulled pork and side-dishes and a bunch of desserts. We prefer donuts, but we’ll take what we can get,” Beaver said, joking. “And on top of that, there were door prizes that they gave out. It was a really nice luncheon.”

One of the giveaway prizes was a guided fishing trip for four, according to Irwin, who offered words of gratitude for all the businesses that helped with the event.

“We couldn’t do it without partners like the Sawgrass Marriott, the Hilton Garden Inn and everyone that contributes to the prizes,” he said. “It just makes this a lot of fun. It’s the least we can do and it’s nothing compared to what they do.”
