Athlete of the Week: Davis Lee

Posted

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Davis Lee, a Ponte Vedra High School senior who has committed to playing golf at the University of North Florida (UNF). Earlier this year, Lee medaled in the U.S. Amateur qualifier after shooting his second 67 in a row and finishing with a 10-under-par 134. More recently, Lee finished with a score of 154 among boys ages 16 to 18 at the Timacuan Golf & Country Club course.

A video portion of this interview will be posted shortly.

What is your biggest achievement thus far that you’re most proud of?

I’d say qualifying for the U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach. It's the best amateur golf tournament around the world. It was definitely a challenge because that was the biggest tournament I played in. I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know how good the players were in the tournament. Once I got there, I just stuck to my game plan and hoped I was as good as the guys that were there.

What do you do to get better?

I practice about every single day of the week. Monday through Friday I'll go on the range and practice aspects like my swing. I'll do putting and chipping. On the weekends I'll play golf, I'll either have a tournament or I'll try to play 18 holes.

What's the most difficult aspect of the sport?

Definitely the most difficult aspect is mental. When you're out there and you have a bad hole or get a bad shot, it's really easy to get frustrated with yourself, but you just have to stay calm and trust the process. At the end of the day, you're out there to try and have fun.

Who in your life has helped you get better?

My dad obviously, and then I have a golf coach who helps me with mental and swing aspects of the game.

Why did you choose golf?

I was with my grandfather one day when I was probably, eight years old. He grew up playing golf, he was a good golfer and he took me out to the golf course one day with him and I just really liked it. I was pretty good actually and I just stuck with it ever since then.
