First-graders on the Bolles Lower School Ponte Vedra Beach Campus enjoyed a “snow day” in mid-December that even included a snowball fight of sorts.
Polar Express Day is a much-anticipated event for first-grade students in the classrooms of Shelly Lenhart and Melissa Nicholson. In addition to wearing their pajamas to school, students spend the day enjoying seasonal snacks and watching the holiday film “The Polar Express.”
Teachers also snuck some meaningful lessons into the day. The snowball fight was actually a “sight word snowball fight.” The snowballs were crumpled pieces of paper, which could be unwrinkled to reveal important vocabulary words for their reading fluency.
The day also included valuable service work. First-grade students and their families donated new pajamas and storybooks for children in need.
