Cummer Beaches, a support group of the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, recently announced it will be holding an art lecture series at the Beaches Museum and History Park Chapel.

The first program on Friday, Sept. 7 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. features Dr. Debra Murphy, professor of art history at University of North Florida (UNF). This lecture entitled, “Florence: The Cradle of the Renaissance” will explore one of the most spectacular flowerings in the history of art.

Renaissance works from the Cummer collection such as “The Madonna of Humility with Angels” by Agnolo Gaddi, “The Holy Family” by Giorgio Vasari and others will be examined in the broader context of Florentine art.

Murphy has been the inaugural chair of the Department of Art and Design at

UNF since 2004. She has been recognized for outstanding teaching by UNF, The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville and the Southeastern College Art Conference. She has also written a book on the early director of the Cummer Museum, Joseph Jeffers Dodge.

This lecture is free and open to the public.
