On Sunday, Feb. 10, the Jacksonville Symphony will be joined by the Florida Ballet for their Spring Family Series Concert, “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.”
Preceded by family-fun crafts and an instrument zoo, the Symphony performs two Family Concerts a season. These abbreviated concerts last less than an hour with tickets starting at $10.
The concert will begin at 3 p.m. and pre-concert crafts and activities will begin at 2 p.m. The event will take place in the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts’ Jacoby Symphony Hall.
Music Director Courtney Lewis will lead the orchestra for this Family Series Concert. Lewis and the Symphony will be joined on stage by the Florida Ballet.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2018 as a nonprofit arts organization in Jacksonville, The Florida Ballet serves over 25,000 community members annually through the education and art of classical ballet. Well known for its instruction offered through its Training Center and Conservatory programs, the organization is nationally recognized as one of the top dance institutions in Northeast Florida.
In addition, The Florida Ballet presents over 50 performances annually across the region and Southeast Florida, as well as provides dance opportunities through community outreach initiatives in area public schools, libraries, hospitals and retirement communities.
Complete with a narrator, Benjamin Britten’s “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” is designed to introduce the sights and sounds of the orchestra and gives audiences of all ages a tour through each section: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.
The program will also feature an arrangement of Debussy’s “Children’s Corner.” Written in the early 1900s, Debussy dedicated this work to his young daughter, Claude-Emma. It is performed with six movements that Debussy wrote to depict child-like scenes including that of an elephant, porcelain doll and a shepherd with his flute. This piece will provide a musical story time before the concert ends.
The performance will close with Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1. Although patrons may not know it by name, the “Morning Mood” and “In the Hall of the Mountain King” movements are sure to be recognized by audiences of all ages. The Symphony will be joined by The Florida Ballet for this closing work.
