On Dec. 14, the St. Johns County chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America hosted an interfaith candlelight vigil to end gun violence on the sixth anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting. The event took place at the Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach.

The gathering provided an opportunity for the community to grieve the tragedy as well as remember all victims and survivors of gun violence.

“Tonight is the sixth anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting, where 20 first graders were taken too soon,” said Kelly Aguirrechu, the local group leader for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense.  “They lost their lives before they lost their first teeth. They would have been teenagers this year. We are here tonight to remember all the lives lost in the Sandy Hook massacre, as well as all of the lives lost to gun violence near and far.”

In attendance were local representatives from the Christian, Bahá'í, Muslim, Jewish, Sikh and Hindu faiths. Each representative spoke words of guidance and encouragement and lit a candle in remembrance of the tragedy.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a grassroots movement that started after the Sandy Hook shooting. The group advocates for public safety measures that respect the Second Amendment and protect people from gun violence. The group also campaigns for new and stronger solutions to gun laws and loopholes that they believe jeopardize the safety of children and families.
