Nease cadets sail aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Sawfish

Swapping a classroom for a patrol boat, 17 Nease NJROTC cadets received some hands-on small boat operations and firefighting training from the Coast Guard on Dec. 6, ultimately earning the Sea Cruise Ribbon.

The Coast Guard Cutter Sawfish, homeported in Mayport, welcomed the cadets aboard and provided a full day of training and education of Coast Guard search and rescue, homeland security and law enforcement missions. The Cutter is commanded by Lt. Ryan Babb.

Cadet Battalion Cmdr. Erin Sass said that this was the, “best field trip ever.”

Cadets got their hands dirty and their uniforms wet as they learned firsthand how to extinguish boat fires. Each cadet had the chance to operate fully charged firefighting equipment.

“It’s the best branch of the military,” Cadet Lt. Brandon Mum said. “Every day (the Coast Guard) has a job to do for the nation.”
