One of Us: Tess Crosby

Tess Crosby is the director of marketing for Vicar’s Landing.

Can you please briefly tell us about your background?

I grew up in New Jersey, worked in New York City for a sports marketing firm and moved to Jacksonville in 1988. I met my husband while I was working as the tournament director of a senior tour event in Indianapolis.  Tim was the media director of the PGA TOUR and for a while, we dated long-distance. When I found myself flying to the wrong airport to meet him one weekend, we thought it was time to get to the same city. I had a career locally in advertising until I was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars. I worked for the team through the first season and then retired to raise our two children, Taylor and Keenan.

What inspired you to work in senior living?

That’s a crazy story. My daughter left for University of Florida, and my son got his license, so I thought I would get back to work —I’ve always loved to work. I was thinking about being a barista at Starbucks, but Tim reminded me I didn’t make the coffee at home. A friend of mine told me about the job, but since I had no experience in the field, I thought it was a long shot. Vicar’s Landing took a chance on me, and it proved to be a great fit.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

The members; they are the most incredibly interesting and fun group of people, and I so enjoy helping associate members (wait list) find the perfect new home! I love having guests visit the community and exposing them to the premier community in North Florida and dare I say the state. Also, I couldn’t ask for better people to work with — every department supports the efforts of marketing.

How has senior living changed during your career?

Members are moving in younger, and more couples are moving in than ever. The Baby Boomers have certainly arrived. We have seen an expansion of programs offered especially in terms of physical fitness to meet the needs of the group moving in. The renovations that took place three plus years ago not only changed the look of the community but also provided more space for great activities.

What do you enjoy most about living in Ponte Vedra?

My father once told me I lived in a vacation, and I agree. It was an amazing place to raise a family; it’s such an outdoor experience with golf, tennis and the beach. I’m very blessed with the friends our family has made over the years — so many are like family to us. And coming from the North, the weather isn’t too bad either.

What do you like to do in your free time?

We are a sports-loving family so you can always find a game or tournament on at our house. Of course, I love when the kids come over for a family dinner — although I don’t do much of the cooking. That’s Tim. I love being outside and try to keep in shape by walking and working out. I really look forward to one day in the far future to retiring and getting back out on the golf course as a family. The members at Vicar’s Landing have taught me how much fun retirement will be.
