Jacksonville teacher and Ponte Vedra resident Shannon Johnson recently won the 2017 Innovative Educator award from the “Jacksonville Business Journal,” recognizing individuals who have created cutting-edge programs that positively impact students or take other innovative steps to increase learning, according to the publication.

The Jacksonville Country Day School science specialist was nominated for her work combining the science and computer labs to create a STEM lab, which includes a "makerspace" and a technology studio. She accepted the award at a May 2 ceremony held at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Jacksonville.

Under Johnson’s guidance, the school’s science lab has incorporated a fully equipped "makerspace" furnished with 3D printers, sewing machines and electrical components. In addition, a technology studio was recently established for students to practice the use of technology for productivity, communication and research.

“We are so proud of Shannon’s accomplishment,” said Pat Walker, head of school at Jacksonville Country Day School. “She is an outstanding example of an innovator – always pushing the limits, thinking of new ways to engage children in science and other disciplines and working hard to bring those around her onboard to new ideas.”

Johnson’s peers agreed.

“[Johnson] recognizes how important it is to inspire innovators,” said former teacher, parent and substitute Sue Stepp. “And she truly brings out the creative problem solving abilities of each child.”
