The fictional town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire will come to life this weekend as the Ponte Vedra High School’s (PVHS) theatre department performs its production of Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, “Our Town.”
Written in 1938, Wilder’s play begins in the early morning, when a pair of twins are born, and ends at night, after one of the main characters surrenders bonds with the past and settles into a final resting place.
"Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it?" the character asks, planting the same question in the minds of the audience.
“Our Town” highlights the passage of time, the fragility of life and the meta stage we live in. Wilder presents a play within a play, with a main character known as the Stage Manager. His invented place is an idyllic piece of America where many long to return.
“We live each day too stressed to notice that life is passing by,” said Jason Nettle, director and PVHS theatre instructor. “‘Our Town’ asks, ‘If you could come back to any day, which day would you would pick to relive and enjoy?’ Why aren’t we living that way now?”
The student production will be at Ponte Vedra High School’s auditorium from Feb. 21 through Feb. 24. Shows are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.
Tickets cost $10 dollars and can purchased via cash or check at the door. Proceeds will support the PVHS theatre department.
