S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue is seeking student candidates to foster and train a shelter pet while fulfilling/receiving 100 qualifying community service hours for school, church, scouting, etc.
Students in the program will foster a shelter dog in their home for six weeks, taking the pet to one-hour-per-week basic obedience training class (paid for and arranged by S.A.F.E.) in their area to be held on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. Each student will write a report about his or her experience, will make recommendations for the type of home best suited for the dog and will create instructions for utilizing the trained pet’s commands.
Benefits of the program are:
■ The student receives community service hours while gaining the experience and responsibility of training a dog.
■ A trained animal will be available to potential adopters.
■ The dog receives the undivided attention from the student and temporarily lives in a loving home while awaiting adoption and learning obedient behaviors.
The program is open to Ponte Vedra/ Nocatee or nearby areas, St. Augustine and Putnam County students. Parental permission and involvement is required.
