Science fiction, fantasy writer to share how to add the “real” in the world of unreal

Most writers have heard the adage to “write what you know.” But what if you’re writing science fiction and fantasy where stories and characters may be set in alien lands and distant futures?

Author T. S. (Tim) Robinson will show writers how to incorporate the real world into their science fiction and fantasy writing at the next meeting of the FWA Ponte Vedra Writers, Saturday, July 28, at 10:30 a.m. at the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch  Library.

Robinson’s presentation, “Using the Real in Your Science Fiction and Fantasy,” will explore ways the writer can use our world to inspire and inform their writing. He said writers will learn these three things from his workshop:

1. Thorough/thoughtful world building

2. Consistency/continuity editing, and

3. Attention to details/careful design

Robinson spent his adolescence immersed in role-playing games, especially “Dungeons & Dragons.” He took up the pen seriously in 1995 to write his own fantasy stories, but after a series of “good, but not good enough” rejection letters, he sought out the mentorship of one of his favorite writers, Piers Anthony, who took Robinson under his wing and showed him the subtle nuances of writing for publication versus for writing for pleasure.

Robinson has published three novels since then and tours convention circuits as a literary guest throughout Florida. In 2012, he founded the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of Jacksonville (SFFJAX) writing group where he provides writing workshops to aspiring writers.

The Ponte Vedra Writers group is part of the Florida Writers Association, a statewide, non-profit organization with over 1,500 members dedicated to the support of both aspiring and published writers in any genre. The July 28 meeting is open to members and non-members alike. For information on FWA, visit www.floridawriters.net.
