Ponte Vedra High School softball player Tara McGee was honored Thursday, March 8, during Senior Night prior to the varsity home game against the Bradford Tornadoes of Starke.
McGee, number 32, is catcher for the Sharks. She has been playing softball since she was 10 years old and has been a dual-sport athlete for all four of her high school years, competing in varsity weightlifting as well as softball.
She received an unusual gift after the ceremony: the home plate she has presided over for her entire high school softball career. The plate was recently replaced, something McGee had been requesting, according to the coaching staff. So the old one was given to her.
Joining her for the recognition ceremony was mom Tammy, dad Mark and brothers Kevin and Cooper.
In addition to her participation in sports, McGee has been a member of the National Honor Society, English Honor Society, History Honor Society and American Sign Language Honor Society.
She has been accepted into the honors college at University of South Carolina Aiken, where she intends to major in chemistry and minor in mathematics. She will also continue to play softball in college.
After college, she hopes to seek out a commission as a pilot in the U.S. military.
