The St. Johns County Council on Aging will host the following events and activities at the River House — located at 179 Marine St. in St. Augustine — and THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center —  located at 175 Landrum Lane in Ponte Vedra.

 Dinner and a movie

Join moviegoers for a movie night on Thursday, May 17 at 4:30 p.m. Admission costs $15 for River House members and $20 for non-members.  In addition to dinner, guests will receive a soft drink and popcorn.  Beer and wine will be available at an additional cost.  Call (904) 209-3655 to reserve a seat

  

Spring Fling Dance Show

 

The Spring Fling Dance Show will take place Thursday, May 17 at 10 a.m. in the River House Ballroom. Dancers and instructors will showcase their skills in this complimentary program. Guests can enjoy a bite to eat in the café afterward.

 

Books & Bites with Authors

Books & Bites with Authors will take place Thursday, May 24, featuring Stroke Educator Dr. Tom Broussard from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Broussard will discuss his “Stroke Diary” trilogy while guests munch on goodies from the café. Signed copies of his books will be available at an additional cost. Seating is limited, and reservations are required by May 18. Call (904) 209-3655 to register. AARP driver improvement class

 

The Council on Aging and AARP will sponsor a class for mature drivers (55 and over) to help senior drivers practice their skills.  This class will be held May 31 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call (904) 209-3655 to reserve a spot.  The cost at the door is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-AARP members. Bring an AARP card for discount eligibility.

 

Genealogy

 

Join the River House for a six-week course on researching family histories. Visitors will learn the tips and tricks to enable them to navigate branches of their family tree. Call (904) 209-3655 to reserve a spot. Admission is $30 for River House members  and $35 for non-members. Classes begin on June 5.

 

Computer basics

Learn the basics of navigating a computer, the internet and various Microsoft programs. The class will also feature discussions on how to avoid online scams and tips on social media platforms, such as Facebook. Call (904) 209-3655 for a reservation. Drawing 101

Guests interesting in learning to draw can participate in this easy four-week class on Wednesdays starting June 6 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Participants will learn the basics of line drawing, composition, shading and one-point perspective. Admission is $40 for members and $45 for non-members, which includes a drawing journal, pencil and eraser. A list of additional supplies needed will be given out on the first day of class.  Art appreciation lecture

 

 “Salvador Dali & Surrealism,” presented by Jean Serusa (BS, MS), a certified New York state art educator, will allow guests to explore intriguing works of Dali along with the rise and circumstances of the Surrealism movement of the 1930s. This event will take place June 7 from 10 to 11 a.m. Admission costs $3 for members and $4 for non-members. Call (904) 209-3655 to register.

 

Greeting card creations

 

Join the River House on Monday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to learn how to make greeting cards for every occasion. Participants will learn the basic techniques and supplies needed to make unique cards from home. Admission costs $12 for members and $15 for non-members. Supplies are included. Financial Fridays

 

Join the River House on the final Friday of the month to discuss financial issues impacting senior citizens. Various local professionals will share their knowledge, tips and expertise to assist seniors with numerous financial situations.
