COA’s THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center announces January schedule

The following programs will be held at COA’s THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center, 175 Landrum Lane, Ponte Vedra Beach, beginning in January. Most classes are five weeks long and begin the first week of January. If you have any questions, call the center at 904-209-3659.

Lunch — Tuesdays: Five weeks starting Jan. 2. Noon to 1 p.m. Registration required a week in advance and fee required: $5 per meal.

Lunch — Thursdays: Four weeks starting Jan. 4. Noon to 1 p.m. Registration required a week in advance and fee required: $5 per meal.

Duplicate Bridge: Four weeks starting Jan. 5. Noon to 3 p.m. Fee required: $2 per person, per Friday. You must have a partner.

Line Dancing Class: Instructor Will Oglesby teaches you many different line dances with a good selection of music. Open to all adults and experience levels. Five weeks starting Jan. 3. 4 to 5:30 p.m. Registration and fee required: $37.50 per month or $9 per class.

Tap Dance Class: Instructor Ginny Wirzbicki brings much experience to this style of dance and encourages all different levels of dance to learn. Four weeks starting Jan. 5. 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Registration and fee required: $25 or $6.25 per class.

Hisshin Sumi-E Painting Class: Traditional East Asian brush painting. This class typically meets once a month. This month the date is Jan. 11. Class is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fee required: $3 per person.

Acrylic Painting: Five weeks starting Jan. 3. 9 a.m. to noon. No fee required. Instructor on site Jan. 10.

Caregiver Support Group: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 3. The group is open to all adult caregivers; meets once a month, on the first Wednesday of each month. This is a free program. Register with the Alzheimer’s Association at 800-272-3900.

Chair Exercise — Tuesdays: Five weeks starting Jan. 2, 9:30 to 10 a.m.

Tai Chi: Four weeks starting Jan. 4, 10-11 a.m.

Canasta — Tuesdays: Five weeks starting Jan. 2, 10 a.m. to noon.  

Canasta — Thursdays: Four weeks starting Jan. 4, 10 a.m. to noon.

Mexican Train Dominoes: Five weeks starting Jan. 2, 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Ask a Nurse: Five weeks starting Jan. 2, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Bingo — Tuesdays: Five weeks starting Jan. 2, 1-2 p.m.

Bingo — Thursdays: Four weeks starting Jan. 4, 1-2 p.m.

Social Bridge: Five weeks starting Jan. 3, 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Board Game Playing: Five weeks starting Jan. 3, 10 a.m. to noon.

Wii Bowling: Four weeks starting Jan. 4, 10-11 a.m.

Tales from the FBI: Meet William Dayhoff Jr., a retired senior FBI manager with a specialty in white collar crime and counter-terrorism finance, for some true crime stories. 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 2.

Julio Castro Photography: Julio DeCastro is an award-winning, local freelance photographer with more than 40 years of experience in portraits, wedding, corporate, travel and fine art photography. Come enjoy his free presentation, “Photography, Shot from The Heart,” featuring a wide range of landscape, wildlife, portraits and street photography shot locally, nationally and internationally from his “Signature Series Collections.” 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 4.

St. John’s County Library: The Ponte Vedra Beach Branch of the St. John’s County Public Library System visits. 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 9.

Blood Donations: It’s National Blood Donor Month. Giving blood is easy. It can take 15 minutes to about an hour, but your impact will last a lifetime. Join us as OneBlood brings their Big Red Bus to THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 9. All donors receive a gift of appreciation as well as a health checkup, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, iron count and cholesterol screening. Call to RSVP 904-209-3659. Free.

Physical Therapy Evaluations: Dr. Jonson Yousefzadeh PT, DPT of Direct Orthopedic Therapy visits to facilitate an interactive workshop on balance and fall prevention. The doctor will note your results, make recommendations and return in 90 days to assess your improvements. 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 11. Free.

Traveling Light 904: Learn how Traveling Light 904 JAX plays a crucial role in helping seniors and individuals with special needs relocate to new homes or facilities. Moving can be a stressful and overwhelming time; you don’t have to do it alone. 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 16.

Happy Birthday January Babies! Join us for cake and one of our favorite entertainers, Lou Parisi, from 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 18.

Care Connection: Do you need help? Do you find it difficult to make ends meet? Are you in need of some help with the cost of groceries or health care? You are not alone. Did you know there may be help available for you? Many seniors qualify for — but are not yet enrolled in — benefit programs that could help them pay for prescriptions, medical care and food. A Care Connection representative will be on site from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 18 to meet with you.

St. John’s County Legal Aid: Free lecture on “What Happens if You Die Without a Will?” presented by Megan Wall, St. Johns County Legal Aid managing attorney. 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 25.
