Owner/instructor Chris Oklevitch from The Women’s Defense Company will be the guest speaker at the next Coastal Friends monthly luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 1 at Marsh Landing Country Club, 25655 Marsh Landing Parkway, Ponte Vedra Beach. The Women’s Defense Company is “dedicated to providing effective and trusted self-defense tactics. The company was formed to promote safety education and reality-based self-defense training.”

The luncheon is open to the community, members and guests of Coastal Friends. The menu will consist of house salad with chef’s choice of dressing, meatloaf, shallot mashed potatoes, roasted broccoli, sweet mustard sauce and peach cobbler for dessert. The cost to attend is $25. Seating will be limited, so reservations must be made in advance by contacting bartshar@comcast.net. Luncheons are held on the first Wednesday of every month, except for July and August.

Established in 1998, Coastal Friends is a social group of women who live in Ponte Vedra Beach, Nocatee, Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach, St. Augustine and the surrounding area.  Some of the activities offered are: adventures and outings, book club, bunco, canasta and canasta lessons, happy hour, lunch in, lunch out, mah jongg and wine socials.

Additionally, Coastal Friends collects food and pet items, toys, gently used items and donates them to various local organizations and animal shelters. May’s organization of the month is Daniel’s Kids, a 140-year-old nonprofit that helps abused, abandoned and neglected children, as well as at-risk families.

New members are welcome throughout the year.
