The Ponte Vedra High Sharks continue to be a class above when it comes to girls lacrosse in the northeast Florida area, as they defeated St. Augustine High 20-4 in the District 3-1A Championship on April 16.
The Sharks jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the blink of an eye in front of their home fans, with the fifth goal coming from the sister combination from Hannah and Lily Toole.
Hannah slipped a pass to her older sister Lily in front of the net for a one-two punch.
The Sharks found themselves leading 6-1 at the end of the first quarter and quickly cranked up the intensity even more on the offensive end with a barrage of goals that led to the 16-goal margin of victory.
Audrey Schmidt scored a couple of quick goals to help open the scoring in the second quarter, including a snipe that froze the opposing goalie.
The Sharks did an excellent job of creating offense on the night, especially after winning faceoffs and converting them quickly into a prime scoring opportunity in the offensive end of the field.
The Nease High Panthers also played for a district title on the night, as they hosted Fletcher High in the District 2-2A but fell 9-7 as a late comeback attempt fell short.
The Panthers trailed the Senators 9-4 heading into the fourth quarter and that is when freshman Amelia Thompson began to take over with three goals in just a matter of minutes early in the final frame.
The third of her goals in the fourth quarter was one for the highlight reel as she regained possession in front of the net and with her back to the goalie, quickly turned and fired a shot in the back of the net.
However, despite the furious stretch of offense in the fourth quarter, there was not enough time remaining on the clock for the Panthers to complete the comeback as the Senators were able to control possession and play keep-away for the most part during the final five minutes of the contest.
The Panthers entered the district tournament as the top seed but will end the regular season as district runner-up and will now look forward to possibly earning a spot in the state playoffs.
