St. Johns County senior centers plan programs, activities

The following programs and activities are being offered this month at specific COA centers.

PLAYERS COMMUNITY SENIOR CENTER

The following programs will be held at COA’s THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center, 175 Landrum Lane, Ponte Vedra Beach, beginning in September. If you have any questions, call the center at 904-209-3659. For more information, go to coasjc.org/ponte-vedra-center.

Lunch — Tuesdays: Noon to 1 p.m. Weekly. Registration required in advance and fee required: $5 per meal.

Lunch — Thursdays: Noon to 1 p.m. Four weeks starting Sept. 5. Registration required in advance and fee required: $5 per meal.

Duplicate Bridge: Noon to 3 p.m. Four weeks starting Friday, Sept. 6. Fee required: $2 per person, per Friday.

Tap Dance Class: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Four weeks starting Friday, Sept. 6. Instructor Ginny Wirzbicki brings much experience to this style of dance and encourages all different levels of dance to learn. Fee required: $25 for the month or $6.25 per class.

Hisshin Sumi-E Painting Class: Traditional East Asian Brush Painting. This class typically meets once a month; this month the date is Thursday, Sept. 12. Class is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Fee required: $3 per person.

Acrylic Painting: 9 a.m. to noon. Wednesdays. No fee required. Instructor on site Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Chair Exercise — Tuesdays: 9:30 to 10 a.m. Weekly.

Chair Exercise — Thursdays: 9:30 to 10 a.m. Four weeks starting Thursday, Sept. 5.

Tai Chi: 10-11 a.m. Four weeks starting Thursday, Sept. 5.

Canasta — Thursdays: 10 a.m. to noon. Four weeks starting Thursday, Sept. 5.

Mah Jongg — Fridays: 10 a.m. to noon. Four weeks starting Friday, Sept. 6. We have two game sets/mats and two 2024 cards that may be checked out at the front desk.

Ask a Nurse: 11 to 11:30 a.m. Weekly.

Bingo — Tuesdays: 1-2 p.m. Weekly.

Bingo — Thursdays: 1-2 p.m. Four weeks starting Thursday, Sept. 5.

Board Game Playing: Rummikub, Scrabble and more! 10 a.m. to noon. Weekly.

Wii Bowling: 10-11 a.m. Four weeks starting Thursday, Sept. 5.

Technical Help for phones and computers: Available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Are you ready for some football? 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Sept. 5. Super fun Jennifer James of Concierge Care drops in to help us welcome back NFL football! Wear your jerseys, hats or other gear to represent your favorite team! 50/50 raffle!

Florida Public Service Commission: 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Sept. 10. Meet Thelma Crump MBA and learn how her organization can help area residents who are eligible for discounted phone service, need help paying their utility bills, and how to avoid potential utility scams.

Happy Birthday September! 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Sept. 12. Enjoy cake, ice cream and the music of Lou Parisi as we celebrate September birthdays.

Fall Prevention! 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Sept. 17. Amy McWilliams of Home Instead talks strategies and services to help you safely age in place — in your own home!

Mobile Manicurists: 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Sept. 19. Nelson Correa of Humana/CarePlus returns this month to help keep our hands looking their best with mini-manicures! Stop in for a polish change!

Feeding Northeast Florida: We are excited to offer this series of free nutrition classes and cooking demonstrations from our local food bank, Feeding Northeast Florida. This month’s topic: Food processing and marketing. 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Sept. 24.

St. John’s County Legal Aid: Megan Wall, St. John’s County Legal Aid managing attorney, presents a lecture on the expense of nursing homes; you don’t have to go broke! Come take advantage of this important free lecture. 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Sept. 26.

Check Your Blood Pressure with Diane DeCarlo: 10:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. Free

COA CENTER AT UF HEALTH NOCATEE

The following programs will be held in September at COA Center at UF Health Nocatee, 351 Town Plaza Ave., Suite 205, Ponte Vedra. TUESDAYS

Exercise, Stretch, Move & Groove (no floor): 10-11 a.m. Sept. 17 and 24. Free and easily adapted to your fitness level. Can be done standing or sitting.

Caregiver Support Group: All caregivers are welcome. The group meets every Tuesday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. There is a trained facilitator present at every meeting to guide the group.

Open Card Play: 1-4 p.m. every Tuesday. Bring your deck of cards and join others in playing the card game of your choice. No instructor will be present. This is a self-directed group.

Bereavement Sessions 1 & 2: Experiencing grief due to the death of a loved one? Six sessions starting Sept. 10 and ending Nov. 19. Pre-registration required because space is limited. Registration closes on Aug. 27.

Widows and Widowers: Social group meeting the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Some meetings may take place outside the COA. 

Decluttering for Seniors: 10:30 to 11:30 p.m. Sept. 17. Learn to simplify your space to simplify your life from this free presentation by global real estate adviser Angel Cutshall.

WEDNESDAYS

Open Art: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday. Bring your art or craft project to work on while socializing with friends.

Mah Jongg Meet-up: Open play for experienced players. 1-3 p.m. September 11 and 25; and 3-5 p.m. Sept. 18.

Scams & Fraud Protection: 10-11 a.m. Sept. 11. A special presentation by St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

How to Navigate Food Choice after a Pre-Diabetes or Type II Diabetes Diagnosis: 10-11 a.m. Sept. 18. A free presentation by Jennifer Wickliffe, MPH, CPH.

Genealogy Group: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 18. A genealogy expert will guide you in discovering your ancestors on the third Wednesday of each month.

Healing Hearts: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. A group for grieving a loss.

One-on-One Tech Help: One-on-one help for your smart phone, tablet or laptop questions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sept. 10, 17, 24. Call 904-209-3655 to reserve a one-hour spot.

Happy Hookers: 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays. Join this social group as they crochet, knit, etc.

Widow to Widow: 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wednesdays. A support group for widows by widows.

STA Strong BHOF (Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation) Education Group: This group meets bimonthly to learn about prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. The next meeting is on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Open Game Play: 12:15 to 3:15 p.m. every Thursday. Bring your deck of cards or your board game and socialize over a friendly game of your choosing. There are games available at River House.
