One of improvisation’s hallmarks is to always say “yes, and ...” Luckily, Amy Angelilli said yes to striking out and creating a dedicated improv space with hard work, a committed core of students and every penny in her pocket.

Third Space Improv will hold its grand opening 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at 200 Malaga St., Suite 7, St. Augustine.

“Improv is more than just creating comedic situations,” said Angelilli. “Improv can help you get out of your head, live in the moment, build self-confidence and make new friends. It’s surreal to see all of the hard work and long days come together. We couldn’t have done it without the support of the St. Johns Cultural Council, friends, family and the improv students; so many people have played a critical role in getting Third Space Improv to this place. We’re thrilled to open a studio that welcomes and accommodates all community members.”

Third Space Improv comes from the belief that everyone should have three spaces: first, home; second, work; and third, a communal space where people can come together and bond over a shared interest. With the assistance of a State of the Arts Grant from the St. Johns Cultural Council, Third Space Improv constructed a stage with a ramp and a railing, providing access to community members with different abilities and wheelchair users.

At the grand opening open house, light bites and refreshments will be served while guests enjoy improv, with the chance to watch or join every 30 minutes. Not one to rest on her laurels, Angelilli’s improv community heads straight into a packed schedule.
